Our Brutal World, is a scheme for a new library at the University of Auckland. The library, consisting of individual book exhibition rooms sits on the current site of Old Government house. The premise for the project lies in Old Government house’s material dishonesty. Old Government House presents itself as a stone building where as it is actually constructed of timber. To combat this dishonesty and the seclusion of Old Government House my project looked towards the idea of the honesty of concrete, an idea integral to Brutalism. As the project developed more concrete precedents were involved and the final scheme makes use of extensive in-situ concrete structures.
